I?ve been trying to reach a colleague for a few days now. I want to ask her a burning question ? when you?re presenting a seminar what do you do when a host company wants to film you and make your presentation a part of their training program?
Do you charge extra for it? How much extra? How do you (they) assure it will not escape their firewall and make its? ugly way onto the Internet?
Anyhoo, like I say, I?ve been trying to reach her for a couple days and I keep hitting her VoiceMail, upon which I?ve left a couple messages. As I am running out of time, I?ll put the question to you: Anyone have any ideas?
The reason I started to write this, though, is to press home upon you dear reader the IMPORTANCE OF ANSWERING YOUR PHONES! Your business depends upon you ANSWERING YOUR PHONES if you are self-employed ? you never know who/what/ when/why a potential customer might be calling! The LAST THING they want to hear is your recorded message, ?Please leave a message, I?ll get back to you when time allows?.
Your customer is the most important sentient being in your business world ? DO NOT risk alienating her/her by exhibiting what really ultimately comes across as a basic discourtesy during business hours. YES I KNOW you get busy and can?t answer your own phone but if this is the case get someone else (besides a machine) to do it for you! At least during business hours. You?ll thank me for this advice ? some day.
Here?s a laughable twist on answering your phone: One day last mid-March I received an automated call at 8:15 am (est) that said, after a few halting moments of silence and clicks, ?We are sorry to disturb you ? this message was intended to have been answered only by an answering machine...? before it disconnected.
(I wonder if the ?clicks? meant it was coming from overseas?)
Well, now, isn?t that special? They have recorded a message (probably for solicitation) that relies on the fact that many, if not most, people rely on an answering machine to answer their phones. It?s one of the facts of life that allow us phone sourcers to thrive ? clearly eight out of ten calls we make internally to a company will be answered by an employee?s VoiceMail. It?s one of my favorite information gathering tools and allows me to prevail many times on a sourcing job where others have failed. But I digress in the direction of tooting my own horn once again but the fact I?m trying to make is that now Industry is on to the fact that there?s money to be made in them ?thar hills ? the closeted and cocooned space home bodies have come to hold holy ? their answering machines.
Is nothing sacred? Apparently not. Maybe the only way to avoid telephone solicitation in the future will be TO ANSWER YOUR PHONE. Imagine that!

! Maureen,
I may be all wet, but based on how you have presented the essence of "The Magic in the Method" here on ERE, it is uniquely valuable and must be protected legally. If you do not have your material copyrighted I would recommend you do it. I would not allow videotaping or recording of my training session; rather I would produce the materials myself with the copyrights and sell them, or if logistics permit, perform the training myself with the company that wants it.
