Job Woes Exacting a Toll on Family Life

Paul Bachmuth's 9-year-old daughter, Rebecca, began pulling out strands of her hair over the summer. His older child, Hannah, 12, has become noticeably angrier, more prone to throwing tantrums.

For many families across the country, the greatest damage inflicted by this recession has not necessarily been financial, but emotional and psychological. Children, especially, have become hidden casualties, often absorbing more than their parents are fully aware of. Several academic studies have linked parental job loss - especially that of fathers - to adverse impacts in areas like school performance and self-esteem.

The Long Goodbye of the American Male

Howard Adamsky takes a stand and it'll knock your socks off.  What do you think?

Women are quietly building and doing and making things happen. Even more importantly, they are doing it with little of the male oriented drunken celebrations, blatant abuse of power and sexual harassment that goes on within corporate America every single day. The bottom line is that women are quietly gaining power. Just as Asian cars crept in silently and one day, crushed our carmakers, smart and committed women will slowly move to dominate and control commerce as the good old boy network collapses under its own bloat. ~ Howard Adamsky

Remarkable women who are changing the world

Running a business, we often get isolated behind our own desks. It's easy to get overwhelmed and enervated. I recommend stepping out of our own world from time to time to get re-energized. Maria Shriver's Woman's Conference accomplished exactly that for over 1,500 women. More here.

Calling for the Holy Spirit to intervene

In 2004, the cardinal who would become Pope Benedict XVI wrote a Vatican document urging women to be submissive partners, resisting any adversarial roles with men and cultivating "feminine values" like "listening, welcoming, humility, faithfulness, praise and waiting."

    Phone Sex in the Office!

Dear Margo: I have a contract position - very much needed after six months of unemployment. I'm doing a good job and get on well superficially with my supervisor. Here's the problem: I am required to sit next to a 40-something schmo in an office with very low cubicle walls. He has easily audible sexual conversations with his multiple girlfriends and either doesn't realize or doesn't care that they are overheard. These are conversations describing how what she did (explicit) felt (explicit) exactly where on his body (explicit) during their lunch hour. I wear earphones and listen to soothing sounds to calm my nerves, but when he really gets on a roll, I go to the bathroom or the coffee machine. But there is only so much time you can spend away from your desk.

My co-worker on the other side, also male (but 25), is incredulous because he can hear it, too. As a contractor, I can be let go for any reason, with or without "just" cause. I can't complain to HR. Bigmouth and his supervisor are big buddies. I feel trapped, demeaned and altogether furious when this occurs. I really try to keep my head down, ears closed and fingers busy on the keyboard, but it gets unbearable! Is there any solution? - Grossed Out

    The answer here.

Is a harmonious relationship between man and woman impossible to achieve?

Is a harmonious relationship between man and woman impossible to achieve? Judging from the results on view at the Golden Theatre, "uneasy" might be the best that can be achieved.

It's Mamet's incendiary take on the consequences of political correctness - specifically involving sexual harassment - and how language helps to facilitate the battle.

Arianna Huffington points out in a blog post headlined "The Sad, Shocking Truth About How Women Are Feeling": "It doesn't matter what their marital status is, how much money they make, whether or not they have children, their ethnic background, or the country they live in. Women around the world are in a funk."

"Why is it that a lot of women when they reach a position of lofty height, manage to make idiots of themselves?" ~ Sandra McCartt

There's a  rumble in the jungle starting up over on recruitingblogs.com - do women have to work harder than men?  Rayanne Thorne started the discussion innocently enough, remarking about those who just "show up" for work and those who go the extra mile and it's seguing into a heated discussion about work ethics and gender motives in the workplace.

"One of the reasons women are paid less is because they spend a lot more time talking on the phone to their kids, their mother, their boyfriend or their hairdresser. Not to mention the dog groomer and the nail salon and the tanning salon. Have you ever seen a guy who couldn't work all day because he was having a 'bad hair day'?" ~ Sandra McCartt

Ya' gotta love Sandra!  So, what say you about this controversy?

In War and Isolation, a Fighter for Afghan Women

Most women in Afghanistan, as many as 80 percent, still give birth without skilled help, and only a third receive any medical care at all during pregnancy.

Afghanistan's problems mirror those of many other poor countries: shortages of personnel, supplies and transportation to clinics or hospitals, especially in remote regions and mountainous areas that are snowbound half the year. The deeper problems are cultural, rooted in the low status of women and the misperception that deaths in childbirth are inevitable - part of the natural order, women's lot in life.

    More here.

What does this have to do w/ recruiting?  This:

During her talk in Washington Ms. Azfar quoted Dr. Mahmoud Fathalla, an Egyptian physician and advocate for women's health: "Women are not dying of diseases we can't treat. ...They are dying because societies have yet to make the decision that their lives are worth saving."

    "Glamorous Job"

TOKYO - The women who pour drinks in Japan's sleek gentlemen's clubs were once shunned because their duties were considered immodest: lavishing adoring (albeit nonsexual) attention on men for a hefty fee.

But with that line of work, called hostessing, among the most lucrative jobs available to women and with the country neck-deep in a recession, hostess positions are increasingly coveted, and hostesses themselves are gaining respectability and even acclaim. Japan's worst recession since World War II is changing mores.

"More women from a diversity of backgrounds are looking for hostess work," said Kentaro Miura, who helps manage seven clubs in Kabuki-cho, Tokyo's glittering red-light district. "There is less resistance to becoming a hostess. In fact, it's seen as a glamorous job."

"Sarah Palin's resignation inspires me." ~ Penelope Trunk

So many people complain about being controlled by sexual harassment, unfair treatment, bad bosses, etc. But we each have power to control our own career. We can go where we can do what we want, how we want. We have to take risks to do that, though. We have to believe in ourselves and our own vision for what's best.

Palin does this. She does not make it look easy. She makes it look smart, though. And that might be just what we need to inspire the same bravery in our own careers. ~ Penelope Trunk

"...female bosses tend to be better managers, better advisers, mentors, rational thinkers. Men love to hear themselves talk."

    Q. It sounds as if you've thought a lot about men versus women as managers.

    A. I have, I have.

    Q. Please share.

    A. Hands down women are better. There's no contest.

    Q. Why?

    A. In my experience, female bosses tend to be better managers, better advisers, mentors, rational thinkers. Men love to hear themselves talk. I'm so generalizing. I know I am. But in a couple of places I've worked, I would often say, "Call me 15 minutes after the meeting starts and then I'll come," because I will have missed all the football. I will have missed all the "what I did on the golf course." I will miss the four jokes, and I can get into the meeting when it's starting.

Men also, they're definitely better on the "whatever" side. Things tend to roll off their back. We women take things very personally. We're constantly playing things over in our head - "What did that mean when they said that?" - when they mean nothing. And I'm certainly not immune to this. So there's a downside to women. ~ Carol Smith, senior vice president and chief brand officer for the Elle Group, the media company

"She's temperamental, excitable. She seems angry."

In confirmation hearings this week, SEN. LINDSEY GRAHAM (R), SOUTH CAROLINA and  SEN. BENJAMIN CARDIN (D), MARYLAND both quoted excerpts to Judge Sotomayor out of the almanac on the federal judiciary about things that had been said about her from attorneys that had appeared before her.

It was interesting what side each chose to quote.

GRAHAM: Here's what they said about you.

CARDIN: They were commenting about you.

GRAHAM: She's overly aggressive, not very judicial. She does not have a very good temperament.

CARDIN: She's bright. She's a good judge. She's very smart.

GRAHAM: She's a terror on the bench. She abuses lawyers.

CARDIN: She's an exceptional judge overall. She's engaged in oral argument.

GRAHAM: She's temperamental, excitable. She seems angry.

CARDIN: She is extremely hardworking and well-prepared. She has a very good common-sense approach to the law.

    GRAHAM: She's makes inappropriate outbursts.

    CARDIN: She's intellectually tough.

GRAHAM: She can be a bit of a bully.

Is Women’s Style of Networking Hurting Us?

Catherine Kaputa is a brand strategist, speaker and the founder of SelfBrand LLC, a NYC-based personal branding firm. She says:

"Given that we have the social gene, I've been surprised in my work as a coach and the research I did for my new book, The Female Brand, that women often don't have an expansive network - yet men do. We women tend to favor deep relationships with a group of close friends, a preference evolutionary scientists trace back to our roots as family caretakers and home keepers. We also see the preference for close, intense relationships in playground studies. Most girls tend to pair up and play one-on-one or with a small group, while boys are more likely to play with a series of different mates and play with a larger group. Later, when female hormones kick in, the preference for intimate relationships with a small group of friends accelerates."

Tightrope: You don't have to choose between love, business

    Hi, Gladys,

I am a successful entrepreneur and have been for the past 18 years. I have never been married or in a truly committed relationship. I would love to find a decent guy. Usually when I meet someone we get along fine until he learns that I own a successful business. Thereafter the relationship starts to crumble.

I belong to a business and professional women's group and many of the successful women in the group have the same problem. Do I have to give up my business for love? Why can't we as women entrepreneurs have a successful business and a successful relationship at the same time? I'm sure you have heard about this problem before.

    Gladys answers here.

    Working too hard?

    Hi, Gladys,

I am doing extremely well in my travel business. But in order to maintain my current level of success I find myself working long and hard, 12 and 14 hour days. I would love to bring more balance into my life, especially since my husband constantly complains that I'm never home and my kids ages 10, 12 and 14 are becoming disobedient and not getting good grades in school. My husband says it's because I'm not home enough. How do I continue to have a successful business and pull my family back together? -C.T.

Answer from Gladys here.  I'm not sure she's right - what do you think?

My Brief Life as a Woman

Even though I only got to spend a brief time on the outer precincts of menopause, it did confirm my lifelong sense that the world of women is hormonal and mysterious, and that we men don't have the semblance of a clue.

And, guys, when your significant female other bursts into tears at the drop of a dinner plate or turns on you like a rabid pit bull - whether she's pregnant, having her period or in the throes of menopause - believe her when she blames it on the hormones. ~ Dana Jennings
