China Drawing High-Tech Research From U.S.

Mr. Pinto is the first chief technology officer of a major American tech company to move to China. The company, Applied Materials, is one of Silicon Valley's most prominent firms. It supplied equipment used to perfect the first computer chips. Today, it is the world's biggest supplier of the equipment used to make semiconductors, solar panels and flat-panel displays.

In addition to moving Mr. Pinto and his family to Beijing in January, Applied Materials, whose headquarters are in Santa Clara, Calif., has just built its newest and largest research labs here. Last week, it even held its annual shareholders' meeting in Xi'an.

Recruiting question

Good morning!

As the market picks up and people are getting back to work the question has come up 'why did they get the job' or 'what can I do to remain competitive'.  Don't be left behind!  Your input can benefit others and by everyone contributing we can make the difference.

There are many certifications and training programs available in our industry and in order to gauge the perception of these certifications/education requirements/preferences I have put together a survey.  It is quick and easy. Your input is invaluable to providing good information that every can learn from.

This survey is open to ANYONE in HR/Staffing.  Once the survey is complete the results will be sent out to the group and posted to the SFRecruiters forum, ERE and others.

The survey link is: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QGGHYH6

It should take less than 5 minutes to complete.  I sincerely appreciate your time and assistance which will help provide a consensus on the certifications/education preferences in our industry listed below.

Would you be willing to participate?

Thank you,

Athena M. Bindel

Dice starting new revenue generating resume service?

I saw this string starting up over on the N. California Recruiters & HR Network Yahoo group - interesting!  You might want to comment.

This is from a very dear friend and fellow workforce journalist, joyce lain kennedy.I'm curious to know if this is accurate.
thanks, fran quittel

TECH RECRUITING SITE:  Just got a pr call  from Robin somebody for DICE. The site is launching a new revenue-generating program to anyone posting a resume on its site. A resume will be "reviewed" and its writer will be contacted with a list of so-called missing marketable "skills" and "certifications" followed by strong recommendation that the writer pay to have this "training" or "testing."
Upon sharp questioning, Robin admitted that DICE gets a cut of the income from some of the vendors. It will be interesting to see the degree, if any, of transparency associated with DICE's new practice.
I won't be mentioning DICE in my future work product.
(Yes, shades of "free resume review"  (Oh, we'll repair your lousy resume for $--)

13b. Re: any want to comment on this dice experience?

You know, it is amazing with Dice. I used to use them for some of my
technical/engineering hires. They are a good resource for that. I have
noticed, however, when I signed up for this and other job boards, I have gotten an unusual amount of unsolicited job offers from scam companies, insurance companies and with Dice, a big push for extra services. I, like many of us here in this group, have been writing, reviewing and reading resumes for a living for many, many years. Of all the things I don't need, having a "professional Dice rep" critique my resume is not one of those things. Joyce, below, is right with regards to that. Shame. I think they arem really hurting for business. Not a good way to keep potential hiring clients
happy. Especially when the market comes back and we will be looking for job board resources. Just my 2 cents.
TM

I think we're going to be seeing a lot more of this from now on. Companies are now reporting filling smaller and smaller percentages of their open positions via the major job boards (<25% as I recall), so with companies becoming less reliant on them the boards are now having to look for alternative revenue streams to make up for it. With sites like Linked-In, Ryze, and the web 2.0 resources offering much more cost-effective solutions, the major job boards are facing some very stiff competition.
TA

Hi,
My 2 cents as well - ihire.com has been pursuing me for the "extra" revenue stream as well. Emailing me that "they are concerned" recruiters will not get past the first 5 seconds of my resume. Really ~ perhaps you should read my resume knowing I'm in the biz....
Desperado for a rev stream
Totally agree they are not thinking long term.....
ER

Jobfox is doing the same thing also. They have been doing it about a year.
Also another trend .....Now when you log into monster as a candidate you have to go thru an ad?  KL

What I find particularly objectionable about ihire.com's business model is
the fact that they charge candidates a fee to see the details of a job
posting. They have several different "subscriptions" one can purchase, and
that's the only way to fully review and apply for any of the positions they
have posted. Notwithstanding my basic philosophical objection to charging
people to apply for a job - a practice I find utterly appalling - why on
earth should someone pay for information that they can easily get for free
somewhere else? With posting consolidation sites like Indeed and
Simply-Hired, for example, to say nothing of the major job boards, I doubt
that ihire has any positions listed that can't be found elsewhere. My resume
is posted there, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay to apply for a job.
TA

Yes, it looks like companies are feeling the economic pinch & are trying
to come up with creative ways to generate revenue. That alone is not a
bad idea, but I hate to see it happen at the expense (literally) of the
unemployed who can ill afford it.
A career transition client of mine contacted me earlier this week in a
panic. His resume had been posted, & he received an email from Job Fox,
telling him that his resume we in serious need of improvement. They gave
a few suggestions, and told him that for a fee (it was $300 or $400)
they would rewrite it for him. His resume was in pretty good shape
already, & by & large I agree with their overall comments, but the vast
majority of the issues they raised were already incorporated into his
resume.
I find it shameful for people to prey on the unemployed. They are
already feeling vulnerable & lost, and for many, the $400 could be
better spent on necessities. There are so many free and/or low-cost
resources out there, & $300 - 400 is pretty steep for someone without an
income.
This is far from the worst example of this type of predatory behavior.
Several years ago, a friend's husband was in a job search. As a favor to
her, I worked quite a while on his resume, and with all due modesty,
must say that I created a document that took his mediocre background &
made him look good, in spite of himself. (Yes, you're right - he's not a
superstar) His resume was posted & he was contacted by a "career
management" firm (don't remember the name) who said that although his
background was impressive, his resume needed a lot of help & promised
him that their resume re-writing service would work wonders, along with
all sorts of other great things, all for a few thousand $$. Well, the
fool borrowed money from his family, & took the bait. They completely
destroyed the resume & turned it into a bland, generic document. On top
of that, they never came through on their promises of introductions to
top executives, unique job leads, etc. They only times he heard from
them were when they were pitching additional services. I find this
practice shameful. HK

Agreed, the Boards are just not the answer anymore. The best people are
still found through professional referral and just picking up the phone!

IBM takes a step toward thinking machines

Scientists say they've made a breakthrough in their pursuit of computers that "think" like a living thing's brain - an effort that tests the limits of technology.

Even the world's most powerful supercomputers can't replicate basic aspects of the human mind. The machines can't imagine a wall painted a different color, for instance, or picture a person's face and connect that to an emotion.

If researchers can make computers operate more like a brain thinks - by reasoning and dealing with abstractions, among other things - they could unleash tremendous insights in such diverse fields as medicine and economics.  More here.

Google ready to open wallet again after stellar 3Q

Google is gearing up for even better days, a shift that will involve hiring a couple thousand new employees after paring its payroll in each of the past two quarters. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company also intends to increase spending on computers and acquisitions of mostly small technology startups. Money won't be a problem, given that Google ended September with $22 billion in cash.

"There is a real wind of optimism and a real wind of confidence around here right now," Patrick Pichette, Google's chief financial officer, said in a Thursday interview.

Away from the financial bust, tech stocks boomed

While the Dow Jones Industrial Average has risen 53 percent - crossing back over the 10,000 mark Wednesday - and the S&P 500 has improved 61 percent since March 9, the tech-heavy Nasdaq has jumped an even sharper 71 percent. Financial stocks have rebounded more, but they had farther to go after being beaten down in the market meltdown.

Client Development for Tech Contracting Positions

I'm an experience tech recruiter but I've been out of the business for some time and my client contacts are stale.  I've developed a couple strong Oracle DBA/Developer contractors in Southern California and I need to pitch them to hiring managers.  Positions posted on the web seem to be dominated by other recruiters so it is difficult to see companies that may be hiring and even more difficult to know who the hiring managers are.

Any suggestions on how to get to the decision makers in today's market?

Where's the next boom? Maybe in cleantech

Silicon Valley investors are pointing to something called cleantech - alternative energy, more efficient power distribution and new ways to store electricity, all with minimal impact to the environment - as a candidate for the next boom.

Web-monitoring software gathers data on kid chats

Parents who install a leading brand of software to monitor their kids' online activities may be unwittingly allowing the company to read their children's chat messages - and sell the marketing data gathered.

Software sold under the Sentry and FamilySafe brands can read private chats conducted through Yahoo, MSN, AOL and other services, and send back data on what kids are saying about such things as movies, music or video games. The information is then offered to businesses seeking ways to tailor their marketing messages to kids.  More here.

Despite Odds, Cities Race to Bet on Biotech

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Where a textile mill once drove the economy of this blue-collar town northeast of Charlotte, an imposing neoclassical complex is rising, filled with fine art, Italian marble and multimillion-dollar laboratory equipment. Three buildings, one topped by a giant dome, form the beginnings of what has been nicknamed the Biopolis, a research campus dedicated to biotechnology.

At $500 million and counting, the Biopolis, officially called the North Carolina Research Campus, is a product of a national race to attract the biotechnology industry, a current grail of economic development.

Cities like Shreveport, La., and Huntsville, Ala., are also gambling millions in taxpayer dollars on if-we-build-it-they-will-come research parks and wet laboratories, which hold the promise of low-pollution workplaces and high salaries.

HP chief cautious about return of pent-up demand

While other big technology vendors have said they've seen demand bottom out and show signs of recovery, Hewlett-Packard Co. has stayed cautious, warning it's too soon to tell when its business will improve.

HP's CEO, Mark Hurd, reinforced that outlook Thursday. He told investors and financial analysts at a meeting in New York that he's confident HP can hit its profit forecast, but he wouldn't speculate on the timing of a turnaround in tech spending.

The recession has created a lot of pent-up demand, because it has disrupted the normal cycle of tech upgrades, Hurd said, and when that will get back on track is unclear.

"The buildup now of 4-year-old desktops, 4-year-old notebooks, 4-year-old servers, this is creating quite a bubble," Hurd said at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co.'s "Strategic Decisions" conference. "There's going to be a time when there's going to be some real opportunity here."  More here.

Recession suddenly humbles high-tech sector

LOS GATOS, Calif. (AP) - The $1.6 million red Bugatti crouches in the showroom, flanked by Lamborghinis, Bentleys and a Rolls-Royce all polished to a shimmer. The nearby potted plants, however, are dusty and wilting. With super-luxury car sales here just half of what they used to be, they had to cut something. "We wash our own windows now, take care of the plants ourselves," says Ryan Dohogne, general manager of Silicon Valley Auto Group. Although they haven't laid anyone off, yet, Dohogne said they're saving everywhere they can.

What Woven Webs

Motorola Meltdown

Liska didn't get much of a reaction from the directors after his presentation, according to his filing. But the next day at 11 a.m., he bumped into Motorola's top lawyer, Peter Lawson, and asked if he should join the board meeting in progress. Lawson popped into the meeting and came back to tell Liska not to join. Liska says this was the first time he had been excluded from a board meeting in his 11 months with the company.

Five hours later, Greg Brown, who shares the chief executive title with Jha, told Liska he was being replaced as CFO. "Paul, you fired a shot heard around the world," he said, according to Liska.

The reason behind Liska's inflammatory presentation is a matter of contention. Liska says he was trying to fulfill his duty to the company by raising a red flag about the cell phone unit's projections. Motorola says he knew he was on his way out, and he tried to extort the company by setting himself up as a whistle-blower who was being fired for speaking out.

If the truth lies somewhere in between, Liska may have figured out that he was on the outs because he and Jha did not get along, and tried to save the situation with an attack on Jha.

What if you didn't have the Internet?

Google glitch disrupts search engine, e-mail

Millions of people were cut off from Google Inc. (GOOG) (GOOG)'s search engine, e-mail and other online services Thursday, sparking a flurry of frustrated venting that served as a reminder of society's growing dependence on Google's technology.

The Mountain View-based company blamed the trouble on a glitch that routed too much of its traffic through computers in Asia, overwhelming its system so badly that about 14 percent of its users encountered problems with the Internet's most popular search engine. The mistake also affected Google's e-mail and several other services.  More here.

EU fines Intel record $1.45B for sales tactics

The European Union fined Intel Corp. (INTC) (INTC) a record euro1.06 billion ($1.45 billion) on Wednesday and ordered the world's biggest maker of computer chips to stop illegal sales tactics that shut out Silicon Valley rival AMD.

The fine, which exceeded a euro899 million monopoly abuse penalty imposed on Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) (MSFT) last year, was denounced by Intel as "wrong." The company said it would appeal to an EU court within 60 days.   More here.
