I am seeing more and more profiles on LinkedIn being posted as "Private" with no actual contact name listed. Got me thinking:
- Has LinkedIn become so prevalent (See OVER EXPOSED, OVER USED, ANNOYINGLY USED) a tool for recruiters that people are no longer displaying their names to avoid an ever increasing number of recruiters from calling them?
- The downside of all the LinkedIn hype and viral marketing of the tool
- It really, effectively just turns it into a online Rolodex in which only the user can see the profiles
- It severely diminishes the value of the pay model ($xxxx per year is a big number) to see "everything" if the users can simply block inquiring minds from seeing the valuable information.
- How important is it to find a Senior Tax Manager at KPMG in Tuscaloosa, Alabama if you still have no idea who to ask for?
- How does this change the whole value prop of LinkedIn
- Keep an eye out for the "next" big LinkedIn look alike cuz if the trend continues, it will be just around the corner.
Just thinking out loud.1 reply

I have been on LinkedIn since 2005. At that time, it was a site that you connect with those that you actually knew or worked with. In my opinion, that is when it had true credibility and network value vs. a directory where some may feel over exposed. Because it has turned into more of a "directory", people are choosing private" profiles I would guess. I do not see the harm in this as you can still send them an e-mail if you think you know them or would like to ask for an introduction. You just can't call them on the phone. The value and credibility diminishes on the site, in my opinion, when there are so many outdated, duplicate profiles of people, profiles with just 1 connection with no intention to connect with others and false profiles displayed to attract the contacts they want - it has become sort of muddy :-). Its a networking site! I think that even for recruiters, FB is going to become a more meaningful way to message to a selected audience unless users there start connecting with every person who wants to be their friend too. Its still a great tool though!
