Need talent? Why not make a video to recruit them
Technology has come along way, have you? It may come as no surprise to you that a lot of companies today still use the good old classified ads to type essentially the same thing as everyone else, but with a video camera and little creativity you will have a flood of candidates who would otherwise pass you up.
Using a recruiting video is really the most effective way to reach the people that you seek these days, so why aren?t you using it? Do you think it is too expensive? Maybe it is a hassle? No creative ideas? One of our services at The Brand Management Group LLC is to produce compelling, creative, and attractive productions for companies looking for talent, but if you are not in the market to use a service like ours you can still put together something that will bring more candidates. An employment brand video or production is the way to go. Today with the competition running typed ads it makes sense to do something different.
The best production to recruit candidates will begin with an introduction from the CEO or interesting personality, company history, and employer value propositions. The goal is to create interest by showing your company in a positive way that inspires and motivates the viewer to want to be a part of your company or organization. I have always said ?creating interest is half the battle?. A creative idea is limitless, comedy, inspiration, or stunning graphics can all create interest. If you are thinking about making a recruiting video internally I would suggest that you talk with people in your company who make video productions as a hobby, or talk with your generation Y employees, they are very tech savvy. In any case start considering videos as a way to recruit new talent. You can upload them on your website or You Tube and link it to your ad.
If you are considering employment branding options than consider video instead of typed ads. This is the time to seize the market, so start now before you?re just another video!

"I've seen some great recruitment videos improvised by a few twenty-somethings with a videocam!"
George, I couldnt agree more.
A good example from Yahoo targeting the X & Y Generations, using nothing more than a unique story and some entertaining employees. http://ycorpblog.com/2007/08/13/this-is-faceball/
These generations will be very wary of an executive reading a script. However, there is something very authentic about first hand story telling by one's peers.

Somewhat agreeing with Ernest, and somewhat disagreeing with him...
"There's video then there is video." Very true. As is the value of "truth well told."
However, I don't think that marketing & video professionals are necessarily the best at telling the truth, even those who specialize in recruitment advertising/video.
In this YouTube world, the majority of candidates aren't necessarily looking for slick production (at $2k/minute). They are looking for authenticity and a compelling vision (and humor sure wouldn't hurt). Ever see the movie "Crazy People," where a group of advertising executives are sitting at a table trying desperately to tell the truth about a product? They can't do it, not even to save their jobs. In contrast, I've seen some great recruitment videos improvised by a few twenty-somethings with a videocam!

There's video then there is video.
Like you would with a marketing piece, have an objective and make your video resonates with your target market/candidates.
Any savvy writer can write something that's really great about you and your company. You frequently see companies trying to sell products make all sorts of claims, many untrue. The best companies believe it the "truth in advertising" motto; I suggest ??employers?? also do the same. If you don't know how to do it, then get someone to help you. Video should be the "truth well told,?? otherwise future employees will become disgruntled later and you will experience higher turn-over. Done well and you'll have a leg up on your competition.
You can do it yoursef if you have the skills, if not expect to pay about 2K+ per finished minute for a professional's time and experience. You should look for someone that has recruitment/human capital experience. The guy that's really good at wedding videos is probably not the guy you want for employment branding or job branding videos. Employer branding videos are one type of video, there are other types, i.e. employee testimonials, Job-branding profiles, etc? With employer branding videos focus in the employer value proposition.

Mike Good write up. Up here in Canada we have taken that recruitment video idea and added a regularily scheduled TV show that promoted using 30 second commercial with each of the current employers in that particular month. You can see us on line at www.albertasbest.com Ken
