Monday's Question of the Day (7/7)...work/life balance follow this discussion

    started 16 months ago by

We hear so much about work-life balance...what it means to people, how to make this a part of your everyday life, etc. But how should this topic be addressed in an interview process. Are companies really looking for employees who can balance both and might leave at 5pm everyday for yoga? What are your experiences?

Incoming typical Gen X cynical response and an attempt to re-frame this subject:

Why do we need work/life balance?

Why not play/life balance or sports/life balance?

The very term frames the issue as work not being a part of your life.

A lot of the old-timer HP employees seemed to think it was originally an HP idea (and told me as much) - I am not sure where it came from but I think what was originally meant was "we will not over-work you constantly, as a matter of policy: we will only over-work you when we really need to".

I don't see a lot of this as applying to recruiting because you are (at least for TPRs) commissioned and we are evaluated on effectiveness, not hours worked.

A recruiter once told me that when recruiting is easy, it feels like stealing and when its hard, it feels impossible.

Sometimes I work crazy hours, sometimes I am out at 5:05, but mostly I enjoy it enough not to notice or worry about the time.

Duh! Work/Life Balance Not a Priority for Many Organizations Despite a growing awareness of the importance of a healthy work/life balance, workers and employers are often at odds when it comes to the issue, according to survey results released today by Monster (R), the leading global online careers and recruitment resource and flagship brand of Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NASDAQ: MNST). Among the findings of the 2007 Monster Work/Life Balance Survey, 89 percent of employees polled believe work/life balance programs, such as flextime and telecommuting, are important when evaluating a new job, yet only about half of HR professionals polled consider work/life balance to be an important initiative for their companies.

The survey findings revealed that only 29 percent of workers view their employer??s work/life balance initiatives as good or excellent; in fact, 58 percent say their employer encourages working too much. Furthermore, the long-term outlook does not look promising ?? 61 percent of HR pros believe there will be more employer-provided work/life balance initiatives in five years, and only 56 percent believe that general work/life balance will improve in the future.
