Atlanta Recruiters Discussions « back to group

I was just laid off and responded to an online ad for a Writer position (ready to take a break from recruiting and sales for awhile). After talking with the recruiter and agreeing to have my resume submitted to AT&T, he tells me that their ATS system requires my SSN. Without it, he can't submit me. Said the system was something like eTemp, but I not sure of the pronunciation or spelling. (Recruiter was an Indian lad).
I told him I'd have to think about it and get back to him. I've been in this business for 25 years, and have submitted candidates to ATS systems, but have never heard of revealing the SSN to another party as a condition of being submitted.
The more I think about it, the more bogus it sounds. I can't imagine AT&T opening themselves up to issues of identity theft simply to track someone as a candidate.
Anyone ever heard of this happening?

Nothing is 100% secure. Ask Monster.

This is 100% legit. The number is secure and it has been this way for a long time.

What ATS do they use? Maybe it's time to pressure them into updating their technology. As a recruiter, I would be furious to lose great candidates due to antiquated thinking.

I am sorry to let you and every one here but yes AT&T needs social number in order to submit the resume. Now if you are applying it thru AT&T directly then you donot need to provide however if its thru any vendor ( around 50-55 vendors) every one will ask you those number.
If you all want to verify this please see below:
Questions regarding providing your SSN to AT&T should call 404-927-1050 option 1.

This has happened to me as well. They called me numerous times about a HR position with AT&T. I refused to give them my social.
I have 9 years of Recruiter experience and your SSN# is not needed for submitting a resume.
Glad to see that I was not the only person. I knew something was strange when they asked for my SS#.

Ken,
I worked for the orginal AT&T as a senior recruiter and we were not allowed to ask for DOB and SSN's until the applicant/candidate accepted the verbal job offer.
There are a number of scammers out there who are stealing ID's. And business is picking up for them as people post their resumes to CareerBuilder and Monster.

It is absolutely true. It is a stupid way for AT&T to authenticate double submissions. They lose a lot of talent because of it. I personally have lost 3 stellar candidates because of this requirement and we no longer work with them to fill their orders.

Scary thought to give your social security number to someone but it is probably legit. I've worked with a couple of customer's systems that asked for a SSN# to help establish 'uniqueness' of a candidate (ie. avoid duplicate submittals). Of course it is your choice to give it to them or not. It probably won't allow submission without something entered into the field (which of course can be a number that is not really your SSN - like all but one digit of your area code/phone number).

Sounds like a scam that is going to give Recruiters a bad name. You should do everything you can to get the word out. Great job at already starting the process. Debra

Yes, AT&T positions require use of SSN. I have one on my desk right now for an IT position here in Augusta, GA.

Same experience here for an AT&T position. I told the "recruiter" he was way out of line for requesting my social. I told him that in my 15 yrs experience I'd never had to offer that kind of information, nor would I this time.
I think it's a scam if you ask me. since when do you need a social so early in the process?

Ken,
That is correct. Before your resume can be submitted to AT&T, the recruiter must obtain your SSN number. It has been that way for quite a few years with AT&T.
