Dear Mary: Your best bet is to bring home with you over the weekend several firm names and phone numbers. Grab yourself a cup of coffee and start phone mining through company directories. Also sourcing on company web pages and gaining the e-mail addresses will be helpful. Look at the "contact" tab to see in my case the @mbamgmt.com e-mail address. Once you have that do a Google search and you should be able to come up with additional names.
I also have success when calling into Associate Principals. They are the ones with the glass ceiling and are usually good for a chit chat- you'll see the names proudly listed on the A and the A/E firm?s webpage. In any rate you could put it like this. "I do appreciate your time for accepting my call, but who do you know that fits the profile that I had just mentioned? No I am not interested in talking to anyone in your firm, that's why I am talking to you. (Be silent- let it sink in then follow up with this) Don't mix words, say give me three names or I will start calling in and then mention a PA or PM's name in their firm." You should hear a bit of silence- grab your pen and get ready for the referrals.
Do you have any sly ideas as well?
Sincerely,
Jay

Our best success is utilizing the AIA - both national and local chapters. Also, employee referrals as it seems to be very successful if you offer some sort of reward.

Hi Mary and group members. I am new to this group. I have been recruiting over 20 years, but mostly in other disciplines and industries. I have a new client (based in Sacramento, CA) that is having difficulty finding staff for their Architect firm and would be interested in learning more about top sources for these candidates. They have used referrals and college hiring but need to increase candidate pool. I appreciate any input. Thanks!
