How do you handle unresponsive clients? follow this discussion

    started 2 years ago by

    Hi everyone!

I was just filling out a questionaire from a prospective client and I came across an interesting question. The one question in particular asked how my firm handles non responsive clients.

First I wondered...hmmmm....is this their way of telling me they are a pain in the u know what to deal with? And, why would they want to know that? Will I stalk them? Will I disparage them? What would I say in this response? How would I answer this question?

So, I decided to put it out to the experts, and I think it's a question I don't see addressed enough. How do YOU handle non responsive clients? We all have clients that don't respond with feedback on candidates, who don't respond at all to our marketing efforts, who don't act fast enough with offers, there are so many different ways clients are unresponsive. But again - how do YOU handle them in any situation? And, how would you recommend I answer this question in the particular questionaire I am completing?

      Debbi,

I'll give you my opinion from my 'internal' perspective (and I used to be 3rd party). First, I don't like Bob's perception below. It just comes across as a bit negative. Even if a client is unresponsive, that doesn't mean they won't be dying for help in the future where you could come in and save the day. Lee's strategy below seems pretty good.

All in all, if you don't have a clue what's going on at your client due to unresponsiveness, just stop working on the req. Let them know that you're no longer working on it and move on, but continue developing that client... not from a 'we have an opening/candidate we're working on" perspective, but a "we'd love to be of service to you in the future" perspective.

      Hope that helps.

First thing is to confront them....professionally. "We have a business arrangement, I'm holding up my end of the bargain, and yet you're unresponsive. If this arrangement is to work, we both need to hold up our respective end of the relationship."

If still no response, they aren't a client now, are they?

I agree with Lee. Always remain professional.

It depends. I've had jobs, sent resumes and when we get no response what-so-ever...I will call the client and leave a voice mail (because you know they won't answer) and say "I'm assuming because we have not heard from you that you were able to find someone for the position...i hope it works out and if you need help please let me know."
