If Ted Kennedy doesn't epitomize longevity, I don't know who does. Really, who has the same job for FORTY SEVEN YEARS????
The funny part of my thoughts on this is, I find people jobs. Do I find people jobs or do I find them a place to do what they do best? Or maybe it's a place to do something that pays their bills. Whatever it is I do, to keep doing it FORTY SEVEN YEARS later is an entirely different mindset or subject. My hope is that when I match companies with employees is that it is a productive relationship for the two - that is it. If I hear when I'm 80 that someone still has the same job I connected them too, well......
I posted this question on LinkedIn Friday afternoon. All weekend as I read the paper, (yes, I still read the paper - I love reading the paper (not as much as I used to, but that's an entirely different subject). There were THREE stories on people retiring that held jobs for YEARS - and I mean 40 - 70 years..... (yes, you read that right). 95 year old bartender retiring. Then in the Denver Post today, an organist that held the same job for FIFTY YEARS, well, his last service was today.
What I really want to hear, are the stories behind the stories. I have an entirely different conversation on taking a job and living your life, but I will save that for another day. I want to hear from the people that have the jobs, or still work for the same company - heck, let's even say for 20 years. Why? My Papo (grandfather) worked for SouthWestern Bell his entire career. And that I understand. It was a different time. He retired over 25 years ago - an entire career for someone else. Cal Ripken never missed a game (are all employees that loyal??) I also understand a Granny (grandmother) that created her own business and never needed (or maybe she did?) a career for someone else.
This is also posted on my company website, but I want to hear some stories....
