Already the blogs and articles are touting what is wrong with the Immigration Bill - particularly with respect to the "point system" and, while I agree with most of the criticism, we might be a wee bit premature in critiquing something that hasn't yet passed.
In fact, it failed a major Senate test vote just a few hours ago.
The bill is not being supported by employer groups because in addition to the difficulties with point systems, the Immigration Bill requires that employers go much further to vet new workers than ever before. The employer burden of cost and record keeping will be high. Too high and not very practical.
The bill has provisions that
-cover current illegal immigrants
-address border security
-describe workplace enforcement
-offer rules for guest workers, and
-future immigrants
The good news is most people agree that these are the key areas to solve. Getting it right this time on all of them is highly unlikely but getting it all right eventually is, IMHO, the most important thing we need to do to remain competitive as a nation.
