Do LinkedIn Groups Matter? follow this blog post

I wrote earlier about the LinkedIn Promiscuity Survey Results that included data for people that could be reached because of membership in various LinkedIn groups. But does membership in these groups matter? Does membership make a significant difference in the total number of people you can reach? It turns out that it does! I calculated the number of people each respondent to the survey can reach through group membership as a percentage of their total reach (all the people they can reach). Here are the top 5 people who can reach the most through their group membership based on data collected through August 25, 2007:

Glen Gutmacher reaches over 1 million extra people or 14.6% of his total reach.

Dave Mendoza reaches almost 1 million extra people or 14.5 % of his total reach.

Alex Zaretsky reaches almost 1 million extra people or 14.1% of his total reach.

Todd Hershberg reaches almost 900K extra people or 13.2% of his total reach.

Maureen Sharib reaches over 800K extra people or 12.7% of her total reach.

Does increasing your reach by over 10% seem worthwhile to you? To find out how to join or perhaps create your own group, read Shally's blog: LinkedIn Groups are Now More Accessible.

And yes I am seeing tons of new groups! Will there be a signal to noise problem now?

I think people are starting to realize what you're talking about, Simon, because I've been hit with a lot of invitations to join new LinkedIn groups lately. The motivation for the group creator is obvious -- they have group management tools for every member, new and old, making it easy to connect.

And, Shally, I like the resources on your new site's LinkedIn page. I recommend everyone click the links at the bottom of the Promiscuous Linker page: http://www.jobmachine.net/promiscuouslinker

Groups absolutely matter because joining a group allows one to see first and second degree contacts for all group members who share their contacts.

For someone starting with a small ammount of first degree contacts joining groups can mean all the difference.
