As I begin training a new recruiter, I am reminded about recruiting and interviewing basics.   It's more than just an interviewing.  It's about passion, creativity, sales, marketing, strategic thinking, networking, and the ability to understand what the candidate and client want and how you can make it happen without them saying a word.  I'm also a firm believer that the entire recruiting process can be learned although some have a knack for it more than others.  Others just avoid the process completely, the thrill of the hunt is just not for them.

For those new to the world of recruiter, here are some important points.
  • Understand the position you are recruiting for.  Don't be afraid to ask questions, meet with the hiring manager, and those in the position you are recruiting for.  Look at competitor ads and requirements.  I recommend walking a mile in the shoes of the position you are filling.  Don't forget to reserach the market.
  • Prepare and execute your marketing plan.  Use the research and position requirements to target the specific market you are looking to capture.  Maybe its online sources and networking like facebook and myspace that get the attention of the Millenials you are recruiting.  Or it could be that professional organizations are the way to go.  Your marketing plan is a work in progress as you begin to fill the position.  Know when to change your strategy.  .
  • The pitch.  Find something that gets the attention of prospective candidates and draws them in.  Focus on benefits other than just compesation.  Flexible schedules, development opportunities, tuition reimbursement, and corporate discounts are all great benefits to shout from the rooftops.
  • Be courteous, sincere yet passionate.  A simple smile, a hand written note, and a returned phone call can go a long way. Candidates want to work for a company that cares. Mean something.

And now. . . back to the grind.
