Note to Job Seekers: It's a Digital World

Noticed recently the decline in good jobs listed in the newspaper. Ever wondered what happened?

Newspapers are expensive. Small ads in the Dallas paper for a Sunday run $2,000 with no guarantee that any candidates will apply for a position. I ran a blind ad last year in the Dallas paper and received 1 resume over a period of 3 Sundays.

Newspapers use a method of advertising to job seekers I call "Spray and Pray." I place an ad, spray it to thousands of loyal readers and pray that someone ...

  • Home Depot Restructures Store Human Resource Positions

Home Depot announced yesterday that the company was restructuring its Store Human Resource Managers.  The position is being eliminated effective May 1, 2008.  In its place stores will replace with hourly Human Resource personnell and each district will include 3 Human Resource Generalists and 1 Human Resource Manager.  Current estimates are that 2200 positions are being eliminated with 1200-1300 Human Resource professionals being retained.

I do not believe this information has been released to the public as of yet, however, it has been confirmed to me by several sources within the company as well as Human Resource Professional Bulletin Boards ...

  • Jigsaw, Another Tool in the Recruiting Arsenal

On the surface Jigsaw sounds like a great bet!  I met with my account manager three weeks ago to learn more about how the site works.  I was very impressed with the ability to search for a particular job title, industry, and company all while being able to select my level of contact especially given the fact that the service is free if you enter your personal contacts into the site. Points can also be purchsed.  Being the always persent optimist as well as the ever present cheapskate, I was pumped when the site tour was complete.

  • Attention: Recruiter Newbies

As I begin training a new recruiter, I am reminded about recruiting and interviewing basics.   It's more than just an interviewing.  It's about passion, creativity, sales, marketing, strategic thinking, networking, and the ability to understand what the candidate and client want and how you can make it happen without them saying a word.  I'm also a firm believer that the entire recruiting process can be learned although some have a knack for it more than others.  Others just avoid the process completely, the thrill of the hunt is just not for them.

For those new to the ...

  • Crazy Interview Horror Stories

Ever had one of those crazy interviews that leaves you thinking, " What the . . .??"

I am in the process of putting together a book that includes a section on Interview Horror Stories. By interview horror stories, I mean strange, unusual, and shocking interviews that you have been a part of. For example, a friend of mine had a candidate arrive to the interview with a large, green, pet iguana. The iguana kept moving from side to side darting from shoulder to shoulder. The candidate asked if the iguana could be placed in a palm tree plant in her office during the ...

  • Recession Recruiting Strategies

It's here.  I'll say it.  We're well on our way to a recession.  And as the recession looms, our recruiting strategies need to reflect this change.  I'm all for creative recruiting strategies, and my recent venture is genius.

In my geographic region, we've recently had a major player lay off a large number of employees--over 200.  I learned of the impending layoff in the morning and was able to make contact with someone in HR to extend my sympathies and request a copy of an employee list or the possibility that "the company" could distribute ...

  • Sales and the Future of Recruiting

The business of recruiting is not just about sourcing your candidate and interviewing them.  As economic concerns creep, unemployment rises, and competition in the field of recruiting increases, recruiting is more about selling then recruiting.  It's more than selling the candidate the position and selling the candidate to your hiring manager.  It's about building relationships and loyalty.

As the market continues to tighten, those who sell and understand what both the candidate and the hiring manager want are going to be the clear winners on the staffing battlefield.  Understanding your customers (both the candidate and hiring manager) buying ...

I do, however, claim to have been there.
