The Organization is Flat follow this blog post

I am inspired from Thomas Friedman's book " The World is Flat." His comment is: In a flat world, you can run but cant hide. And I am in accord with the concept of levelling of the playing field. What I fail to understand is why do organizations still have a vertical structure?
In a company, an average of 8 to 9 heirarchies (in totality) are found. Imagine the communication gap! Secondly, what is more important is focus on the results, instead of who is empowered with what. Ownership should be on getting things done, regardless of who does it. Although, the care should be taken not to overlap the profiles. But necesssary interferance in day to day matters does produce effective results. More heirarchies makes this task a tad diffcult than less heirarchies.
Flat structure has got it share of troubles. If we arent accustomed to it, things tend to be taken for granted. The respect for superior people, which they deserve, starts to diminish.
So then what can we do? I sincerely believe, that organization comes before the individual. If I start a business, I will definately go for the flat structure.
