Blog Network

Military Talent

As a prior-enlisted, Naval Academy graduate, candidate at military fairs and placement teams, hiring manager, agency recruiter, and now a military staffing manager at Sears Holdings, I wanted to see a blog that tied it all together; a one-stop shop for MILITARY TALENT. This blog is to share "mentoring" and "networking" between candidates, recruiters, and clients. The battle for top military talent is getting more challenging due to lower percentages of recruits entering the armed forces, and steps taken to keep folks in ($). Let's share our best practices and lessons learned.

  • Finally, a team that is addressing DEMAND, vice SUPPLY!

I know of at least 268 teams/agencies/etc that assist vets in finding work.  When I attend the BIG job fairs (Ft Hood, MOAA, etc), we get excited to see 200 companies.  Where are the other 55,000+ companies?  Here is a group that is launching to Train and Encourage employers to hire vets.

We are very excited to inform you that Easter Seals will host the Operation Employ Veterans Official Training modules roll-out June 22nd and June 23rd, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.

The trainings will take place in the following order in one ...

  • 30,000 military familes....

Our company?s support for the military is strong and goes back more than 90 years. Heroes at Home is a program we created last year with Rebuilding Together. Since its inception, associates and customers have helped to raise more than $5 million and renovate or rebuild over 250 homes.

This holiday season, we expanded this effort by inviting Americans to show their support of military families through the Sears Heroes at Home Wish Registry. This program is a meaningful way for our associates, vendors and customers to make the holidays brighter for the families of active service men and ...

  • Happy Birthday Navy!

The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress established on 13 October 1775 by authorizing the procurement, fitting out, manning, and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America. The legislation also established a Naval Committee to supervise the work. All together, the Continental Navy numbered some fifty ships over the course of the war, with approximately twenty warships active at its maximum strength.

After the American War for Independence, Congress sold the surviving ships of the Continental Navy and released the seamen ...

  • PaYS

The model for all branches to follow, PaYS offers Army soldiers an interview with selected companies upon graudation from AIT, or completion of active service.  Now, PaYS has expanded to include 273 ROTC campuses.  ASEP, and the Guard component - Employment Outreach are also great programs for companies to get onboard with.  The Army is head and shoulders above the rest in getting soldiers prepared, in addition to giving companies access to this talent.

  • Military Recruiting Filling Other Needs?

What military recruiters out there are leveraging the military platform to also manage diversity or executive search?

See a bunch of y'all at the PaYS conference!
  • Thank you ERE!

A lot to catch up on since taking the helm at Sears Holdings.  First, I love my job!  I am simply the luckiest staffing manager out there....running military and diversity, plus a sprinkle of executive search for a work force that has 121 years of history as is 337,000 large.  Wow!  Second, thank you ERE for giving programs that PaYS and other military recruting initiatives the nod.  I look forward to SHRM doing the same at their conference next year.  Last week, Sears Holdings grew the ESGR program to encompass the entire business, as well as expanding PaYS ...

  • Request permission to go ashore!

Working for a third party recruiting team like Kaye/Bassman was both rewarding and eye-opening.  The unique experience of reaching out to all industries, all levels of military talent, and all areas of geography taught me a lot about Talent Acquisition.  I am honored that Sears has offered me a spot to put these lessons learned to action.  Starting April 7, I'll be the Manager of Specialty Talent Acqusition which lets me dive into the talent pools of military, diversity, and college.  For those that have their own experiences to offer, I look forward to learning....for those that ...

  • GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!

Yes, most of us, including myself enjoy a bit of trash talking from time to time.  As we prepare to enjoy one of the oldest, and certainly, highest level of football tradition this coming Saturday....I wanted to ask the network to join me in my friendly banter towards my Army brothers and sisters.  BEAT ARMY!

  • NAVY beats the IRISH!

It just goes to show you that good things come to those who wait.

  • Veterans Day!

"Veterans Day is observed on November 11.
The holiday was originally called Armistice Day,
and it commemorated the end of World War I on November 11, 1918.
Fighting stopped at 11 am, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month."
