Recruiters Transitioning into Outplacement Consultants – Good or Bad Move? follow this blog post

There has been a recent push by recruitment agencies to transition their recruiters into outplacement consultants. Is this a smart move?

Professional Outplacement Firms, be they large or small engage experienced Career Coaches, Org Psychologists, HR Professionals and the like to deliver first class outplacement support. These people have undergone years of formal training and education in their respective professions. Therefore how realistic is it to expect a recruiter, who has a strong sales focus, to quickly flip (often without any training)  and become an outplacement consultant? In what areas can they deliver value to outplacement clients?

Please share your views and thoughts about this topic, as there are clearly some valid points for and against this movement.

As an Executive and Career Coach for Chenofsky Singer and Associates LLC (www.chenofskySinger.com), and a former Human Resources Executive, I would argue that looking for a certified Executive and/or Career Coach is critical. Knowing that I wanted to provide coaching as part of my practice, I obtained an advanced certificate from a well respected college. Coaching is not telling or advising, which is what typically occurs with the recruitment professionals turned "pseudo coach."  The pseudo coach can deliver value to outplacement individuals by sharing their knowledge of what their corporate partners look for in the current market demand and ensure the candidate's resume has the right key words. A true Executive and/or Career Coach will develop a partnership relationship based on a high level of trust and connection. A trained/certified coach challenges clients to engage their inner strengths and draw upon their talents and life experiences. This certified coach will support and empower their clients (job seeker) as they clarify and create their goals and design a strategy plan with the client to enable them to achieve success.
