Don't you love finding something that is just awesome and incredibly helpful and answers questions you didn't even know you had? I recently did that when I started following Boolean Black Belt, Glen Cathey. His posts are straight forward and to the point and shows you how to search for ANYTHING using the tools available today. I am always disappointed with the trainers / bloggers / advisors who get so technical they leave people in the dust and feel good about themselves because they know something other's don't. Glen, on the other hand, goes out of his way ...

Recruiters Are 5% of All LinkedIn Profiles
When I read today's post on Boolean Black Belt (and his tweet on Friday), I was completely floored. As he points out, that means that, "1 out of every 20 LinkedIn profiles in the US is a recruiting, sourcing, or HR professional". Wow.
So what does it mean? The post today does a great job in explaining what it means statistically and he talks about passive candidates vs. active as well as job boards so I won't repeat that here. But what I will point out is if that many professionals are out there, you really do have ...

Don't use the FORM - focus on the client
I walked into a recruiting office and one of the consultants was on the phone. She was chatting in a friendly way about an assignment and doing a great job of getting information and building rapport. THEN she got out THE FORM. And she even said, "okay - I've got THE FORM". At that point the conversation tone completely changed and she started going from top to bottom. You could tell it was frustrating for both of them because there were some things the client had told her but she didn't have the information in the way the FORM ...

Being Passionate About What You Do (and hash browns)
My brother-in-law wanted to go to the Waffle House. I’ve never been to a Waffle House so I didn’t know what to expect (but my hopes weren’t high). We thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the company and my brother-in-law told the chef who stopped by he needed to open a location in Seattle. This led to a conversation about how someone opens a Waffle House. You pay the money and for that the Waffle House parent company pays for the land, builds the building and sets you up to be a Waffle House. One of the requirements ...

Getting To Know You
I love taking sales calls from people. It is just fun. The other day I got a call from a woman who was very nice. She called, launched into her 4.5 minute spiel on who she is, what she does, why she as calling, what research she had done on my company, etc. etc. Finally taking a breath, she asked about me. I told her a little about me and then asked her how she's handling getting new clients in this tight economy. She explained and we talked about some other possibilities. I then explained why I was ...

Sending Your Clients to the Circus
Let me just go on record - I hate jumping through hoops. I'm not very athletic and grace is definitely not my middle name so I never learned the art. So last week when I went to a certain motor club's website to try to figure out if and where we would vacation this year (won't say who, but their first name starts with A, their middle name starts with A and their last name starts with A), I was surprised when I got a message that my membership ID wasn't valid. I sent an email to ...

Under the Heading, Less is More...
I love Chris Brogan He's interesting to read, has great ideas when it comes to social media and other marketing things, and he often makes me think. Yesterday, he posted as a title "I deleted my facebook fan page" and then the post said "because it's not about me." That's it. Now, he's an established blogger who has a HUGE following so at some level he can get away with it, but still. That blog post generated a large amount of discussion and the comments were both positive and negative. From a blogging perspective, it was ...

Do you trust your customers?
Today on a whim, I took my daughter on a tour of a local candy factory. We were in the area and thought it would be fun. After paying a couple dollars for the tour, a nice motherly woman stood in front of us with a tray of chocolates to give us as samples while she explained there were no pictures to be taken on the tour and by the way, you need to give your cameras and cell phones to the front desk person. We then toured the plant. The R&D room, the carmel-making facility and the finishing ...
